New penguin exhibit to open Thursday in Long Beach

A new $1.5-million exhibit at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach featuring a colony of 13 Magellanic penguins is set to open to the public Thursday.

The 13 Magellanic marine birds, in an Aquarium of the Pacific exhibit opening this week, have been busy courting, with one chick and a clutch of eggs added to the colony. The signs of penguins in love were unmistakable at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach on Monday: puffing their chests, standing on tiptoes while clicking their beaks together, belting out donkey-like brays.
